Mental performance coaching for dancers
Fabio Bollue aka Fabijoow
When your dance and your mind flow together
ABOUT ME
My name is Fabio Bollue, living in Leuven and passionate about dance since childhood. At the age of 11, I started doing competitions and did several dance styles over the years.
In 2014, I lost my heart to the style Waacking. Under the alias Fabijoow, I still participate in battles and competitions in Belgium and abroad. In addition, I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience in training and coaching dancers at different levels.
During my Bachelor's degree in Applied Psychology at Thomas More college in Antwerp, I was first introduced to the field of Sport Psychology and soon discovered its added value for dancers. This education trained me in coaching and counseling individuals within different life domains. Although I graduated in work- and organizational psychology, I have never lost sight of the field of sports psychology. My main interest: mentally supporting dancers to achieve their goals. I have personally faced the difficulties dancers experience: high level of stress and pressure, unsportsmanlike behavior, disappointment, negative feelings, ...
Besides the dance studio, you can also find me in the gym, which gives me both mentally and physically a lot of energy and satisfaction and teaches me to step outside my comfort zone.
Furthermore, I describe myself as an energetic and active person who likes to help and support others.
Education and training:
Affiliated with:
Beroepsvereniging van Psychologisch Consulenten (BPC) Flemish professional association for psychological consultants
Flemish dance sport federation - as judge and teacher in Urban Dance
WHAT DO I STAND FOR?
Mission
Supporting dancers in using psychological principles to improve their mental health and performances. Because of this, dancers will experience a mental state of ‘flow’ and feel freedom to express their artistry.
Vision
Bringing more attention for sport psychology amongst dancers and the dance community. Making a difference, but most of all contribute to the dance community by shining a light on mental resilience.
Values
Respect and trust go hand in hand for me and are the basic foundations of the coaching process. In order to create this climate during the coaching trajectory, there will be no place for judgement. Privacy and confidentiality are some of the key components to accomplish this. As a psychological consultant and coach, I will not share any personal information with third parties.
Empowering autonomy to perform steadfastly, confidently and derive pleasure from your passion. As a mental coach I can give you certain tools and help you think about your process.
Accountability of all parties involved is necessary to bring your goals to fruition.
WHY MENTAL COACHING FOR DANCERS?
“During my trainings I perform optimally, but it doesn’t come out at competitions...”
“Right before I have to go on stage, stress and anxiety take over. I have more and more trouble keeping my focus...”
Negative thoughts are contsantly playing through my mind. I’m constantly afraid of what others might think of me...”
“I find it difficult to express my ideas and creativity to my peers and dance groups...”
These are just a few statements dancers and performers cite when they experience difficulty while performing. Is this recognizable to you as well?
The use of sports psychology for dancers is still underexposed in Flanders (and Belgium) until now, but certainly necessary! Dancers can describe themselves in different ways: as an athlete, artist, performer, ... and just like in other sports and art disciplines, dancers want to express themselves fully. Having the right competencies for a performance paired with the necessary degree of self-confidence puts you in a state of mental "flow" as a performer. Being in a flow state means that you experience the perfect balance between your capabilities and the demands of your environment in that moment. Reaching this flow state is exactly where mental coaches have the right knowledge to support you, based on your needs.
You're probably wondering "What is mental coaching? And is it even relevant to me?"
A mental coach is a professional who meets with you to explore and establish your personal goals. Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees, we don't really know what direction we want to go in our career, what skills and tools are within our reach to achieve our goals, ... A mental sports coach focuses on the mental support you need as an athlete to perform in an optimal way, but especially to keep getting pleasure and satisfaction from your passion. From different psychological disciplines (e.g. sport and performance psychology, social psychology, positive psychology) which are also scientifically underpinned, we work during a coaching program together towards your personal goals. You don’t have to be an athlete in the highest rankings to benefit from mental coaching.

THE COACHING PROCESS
The coaching process consists of a number of steps, most of which are completed in chronological order. However, deviations from this are possible depending on the request for help and coaching goals. (This process does not apply to formations and workshops)
STEP 1: REGISTRATION
Fill in the contactform with the necessary information. Click on the icon left to open the contactform.
Within a few business days, I will contact you by phone to go over the form and discuss your initial questions. After, we plan in a first introductory meeting: the intake.
STEP 2: INTAKE
During the intake interview, getting acquainted is central. I also like to learn more about your background, ambitions, goals, ... What is already going well? And what could be better according to you?
Clear agreements are made and expectations aligned to make the further course of the coaching process as smooth as possible. At the end of this session we try to come to one or a number of concrete goals that we will work on together.
STEP 3: COACHINGSESSIONS
Besides providing the necessary education and information about mental skills, we make a ‘plan of action’ together based on your goals and needs. We practice the necessary skills during the coaching sessions so you can continue working with them afterwards. In addition, we follow up on your progress and see where adjustments are needed.
The number of coaching sessions varies for every coaching trajectory. For any progress to show up, it is important not only to work on your skills during the sessions but also to apply them in everyday life. Just like perfecting dance techniques, practicing mental skills needs time, dedication and a positive mindset to reap the benefits.
STEP 4: EVALUATION
After a number of coaching sessions, an evaluation moment follows in which we discuss both the collaboration and your personal progress. What is going well and where do you still need support?
If necessary, we adjust your goals and resume the coaching sessions.
The ultimate goal of the coaching process: to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills and to work together on your mental resilience. Quick fixes (unfortunately) do not exist. Making the coaching process successful and achieve your goals requires time and energy from all parties involved, both during and outside the sessions.
“If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough”
